An archipelago of 572 islands adrift in the Bay of Bengal, the union
territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands stretches over an area of more than
700 sq.kms. For the nature lover the islands offer rich and varied delights.
The sea around offers ample scope for water sports while the islands
themselves consist of their territory lush green forest cover extending over
86% of the territory. The rarest of rare flora and fauna have flourished
undisturbed on these islands, more so because only 36 out of these are
inhabited.
Day 01 :
Arrive at Port Blair airport and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the day is
for relaxation. In the evening at 6.00 pm, watch the Sound and Light Show at
the Cellular Jail - where the heroic saga of the Indian freedom struggle is
brought alive.
Cellular Jail Built by the British in 1906. Because it
was entirely made up of single cells to keep prisoners in solitary
confinement, the prison acquired the name, cellular.
Day 02 :
After breakfast a full-day excursion to North Bay (Coral Island) - to see
coral reefs, exotic varieties of beautiful ornamental fish and other marine
life by a glass bottomed boat. Option available for Snorkeling, Swimming &
Trekking. Spend the afternoon in front of the beautiful Corbyns Cove
Beach.
Corbyn Cove just 7kms from the town is the beach for
those who love swimming, surfing and sun basking.
Day 03 :
Departure for Havelock by ferry. Reach Havelock Island and then move to the
resort.
Havelock Island 54 kms from Port Blair, this beautiful
landscape attracts tourists with its sandy beaches, untouched forests, and
panoramic views. The Radhanagar beach is worth a visit.
Day 04 :
A lazy day at Havelock. Option available for snorkeling, fishing, jungle
treks, etc.
Day 05 :
Return to Port Blair from Havelock in the afternoon and check in at hotel
in Port Blair. After lunch a half-day tour of places in & around Port
Blair (City Tour) covering the famous Cellular Jail, Anthropological
Museum, Fisheries (Marine) Museum, Samudrika (Naval Marine Museum), Andaman
Water Sports Complex & Gandhi Park. In the afternoon, visit the Cottage
Industries Emporium (Sagarika) - for Shopping & Souvenirs
Day 06 :
Back to Port Blair airport.
Lakshadweep
Scattered on the clear blue waters of the Arabian Sea, off the western
coast of India is a group of coral islands of unparalleled beauty known as
Lakshadweep. "Lakshadweep" which means 'A Hundred Thousand
Islands' .It is an archipelago consisting of 36 islands,12 atolls,3 reefs
and 5 submerged banks in the Arabian Sea. These emerald islands, rich in
greenery and fringed by silvery beaches overwhelm you with their natural
beauty.
How to get there and permits
Approximately 450 km from Kochi (Cochin), Lakshdweep is connected to the
mainland both by air (2½ Hrs) and sea (20-22 Hrs) from Kochi. Agatti
has the only airport in the islands. All tourists to Lakshadweep need to
carry ENTRY PERMIT. Foreigners have to submit copy of passport.
Climate & Tourist Season
Lakshadweep enjoys a tropical climate with summer temperatures ranging from
22° C to 33° C and winter temperatures from 20° C to 32°
C. June to September is the rainy season. Agatti and Bangaram may be visited
throughout the year. However the ship based tour packages operate from
October to May.
Islands of Lakshadweep
Kavaratti, the administrative headquarters, is the most developed island,
with the highest percentage of non-islanders as residents. Fifty two mosques
are spread out over the island, the most beautiful being the Ujra mosque. A
well, within its precincts, is believed to contain water of curative powers.
The Ujra mosque has an ornately carved ceiling. Agatti has the only airport
in the islands. Kalpeni has the largest lagoon amongst the islands and is
ideal for all kinds of water sports. Minicoy is the Southern most island and
nearest to the Maldivian Islands. Kadmat is the only island which has a
lagoon on both the sides. Thick green coconut palm leaves form a natural
canopy over the whole area. As a testimony to its water sports potential, a
water sports institute and a scuba diving centre has been set up there.
Bangaram, a short distance from Agatti airport by a speedboat, is where the
up market Bangaram Island Resort is located.
Things to do
Swimming, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Water sports, Lagoon Cruise, Glass
bottomed boat cruise etc.
The Lakshadweep islands are part of the same group of islands as the
Maldives. Underwater life is just as spectacular here groupers,
clown-fish, mantas, sting rays, dolphins grey reef sharks, turtles and other
tropical fish are abundant. The weather is warm even at night. During the
rainy season, deep-sea fishing and scuba diving are not possible, but all
other activities take place in the lagoon, where the waters are always calm.
Boats are available at various times depending on the tides, so it is not
always possible to go diving or snorkeling at short notice.
Accommodation and Ship tour packages
Accommodations are available at Bangaram, Kavaratti, Minicoy, Agatti and
Kadmat. There is the 4 and 5 Nights ship based packages starting from Kochi
(Cochin) where, during the day you will visit the islands and get back to
the ship for the night stay.
