Varanasi is known by three name i.e Kashi (the city of light),Benaras and now as Varanasi. It is the oldest living city in the world and is situated on the west bank of the Ganges River. In ancient times, it was a great centre of knowledge and learning. Amid thousands of temples, the Kashi Vishwanath temple is supreme along with the river Ganges. For the devout Hindu the city has a special place besides being a pilgrimage centre, it is considered especially auspicious to die here, ensuring an instant route to heaven.

The Ganges river which runs through Varanasi, is worshiped by Hindus and is personified as the goddess. Hindu belief holds that bathing in the river results in the forgiveness of sins and helps attain salvation. People travel from distant places to immerse the ashes of their family / kin in the waters of the Ganga; this immersion also is believed to send the departed soul to heaven. The ancient scriptures mention that the water of Ganges carries the blessings of Lord Vishnu's feet; hence Mother Ganges is also known as Vishnupadi, which means "Emanating from the Lotus feet of Supreme Lord Sri Vishnu".

For more than 6 kms,”Ghats” line the west bank of the Ganges at Varanasi. Lined with temples, they reverberate with endless chants of Hindu religious prayers. People throng these Ghats to offer their morning prayers to the rising sun.

The evening ‘Ganga aarthi’ on the banks of the river Ganges with lighted lamps is a mesmerizing sight.
